Eccentric Photography

by Editor Jane Lyons
Edited and published by Yvette Depaepe, the 17th of October 2025

“I find only freedom in the realms of eccentricity” ~David Bowie~

Eccentric is described as both positive and negative.
Positive being; unconventional, quirky and original.
Negative being; strange, maverick, peculiar and odd.

For photographers, a free spirited pursuit of all- of- the above adjectives can lead to the most original and memorable photographs.

Leaving the comfort of familiar subjects is a challenge, yet an exciting way to grow as an artist.

Matt Stuart’s "Trafalgar Square" is one of the most iconic examples of Eccentric Photography. The observation of humorous juxtapositions, flat on the ground camera angle and the artistry to know that the strutting pigeon mimicked the line, shoes and top coats against the white wall.

In a universe where millions of people are shooting traditional photographic categories daily, pursuing something less expected requires creativity, imagination and the sensitivity to translate what is seemingly unconventional and strange into something that is poetic, funny, sharp and haunting.

‘Sisters’ by Leonardo Bandinelli

Conversely, treating something mundane and conventional in an unconventional way is another opening for original, creative work.
Finding charm and beauty in an irregular face or a iconic landscape or in everyday objects and spaces can be fine art when presented in a eccentric way.

Eccentricity is created both in the camera and in post processing. A classic portrait with an artful close up or angle, crop or frame can become eccentric as can an ordinary subject reflected in water, or filtered and edited in Photoshop. Most subjects shot in juxtaposition with artistic sensitivity and humor can become a masterpiece.

"Eccentricity has always abounded when and where strength of character had abounded; and the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigor, and courage which it contained." ~John Stuart Mill~
